Dreamers

Short Film | Drama | 2017

Logline

A young girl, Monica, dreams of becoming an astronaut, but does not realize she and her parents are illegal immigrants from Mexico.

This is a project that was sparked by the world around us. As I began writing this project, I had the pleasure of co-directing with my friend, Lindsay Heatley. Dreamers highlights the political issues around the overturning of DACA, a program that allowed minors who were brought into the United States illegally as children a 2-year deferment to stay in the country. Through co-telling this story, and as a white-bodied American-born human, I learned immensely how to check my privilege at each level of the writing & directing process, how to ask the right questions, and how to uplift the voices of those who most need to be heard.

Donate to United We Dream! "Founded in 2008, United We Dream (UWD) is dedicated to supporting immigrants and people of color in the U.S. Boasting over 400,000 members, it is the largest immigrant youth-led community in the country. UWD has helped more than 37,000 people apply for or renew their DACA. Furthermore, UWD supports the fight for a “clean” Dream Act, which would create a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers without additional immigration provisions, such as border militarization, the creation of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, mass deportations or detention centers."
